The operational scope of the Consorzio covers several aspects, one of the most important is to add value to wineries by focussing on quality. Today Valtellina wine is the international ambassador of one of the most beautiful italian wine-growing terraced areas.
The Consorzio acts as an interlocutor towards the institutions for programmatic and business choices, it believes that wine can transmit cultural and economic motivations to the younger generations convincing them to carry on the wine-growing activities on the terraces in order to preserve this extraordinary heritage, also from the environmental point of view.
Nowadays it’s the one and only italian Consortium that can boast two different DOCGs both for the territory and the vineyard (Valtellina Superiore and Sforzato di Valtellina).
In 2003 it created Provinea foundation for the protection of the territory. In 2018 “the art of dry stone walls construction” was recognized as a “Unesco intangible cultural heritage of humanity”. In 2021 “the terraced vineyards of the Rhaetian mountainside of Valtellina” obtained the prestigious recognition as Rural Historical Landscape and, as a consequence, the entry to the National register of rural historical landscapes.
